Home owners in Singapore are always keen on cleaning, but surprisingly when it comes to the bedroom, some of that keenness is lost. This leads to some spots being neglected while others are not cleaned properly. People use their bedrooms almost every day, if not every day, and this should give you a rough idea of the dirt that collects in such rooms over time. Read on to ensure you do not make any of these mistakes ever again when cleaning your bedroom.
1. Ignoring the mattress
Most readers will attest to this problem. The mattress is often neglected during cleaning yet it is used every single day. Those who remember just flip it to the other side. This means that the next time you flip it, both sides will be dirty. Flipping is good, but it does not clean the mattress. The mattress should preferably be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner. Ensure to use a vacuum that is gentle on fabrics so as not to damage the mattress. You should refrain from using water at all costs since the sponge in the mattress tends to hold moisture even when it is assumed to be ‘dry’.
2. Not changing bedding frequently
How often should you change your bedding? Experts advise that bedding should be changed weekly. Doctors support this claim and go further to state that people with allergies should do so twice. This is because dust, dirt and germs collect on the bedding as soon as you lay on the bed. When left for long, they multiply and cause certain illnesses such as skin diseases and colds. Start changing the bedding at least every week and you’ll definitely notice a difference in your health; those common colds will be a thing of the past. This goes to pillow cases especially, but not to say that the rest are less important.
3. Not washing pillows and comforters
When you sleep on your pillow you drool on it, cry, hair and face oil gets on to it. At first, all these go to the pillow case directly. With time, this dirt seeps through the pillow case to the pillow. As such, the pillows should also be cleaned after a certain period of time. Check whether they can be washed and the manufacturer’s advice on the best cleaning method. Proceed to clean them as advised. If not, consider changing your pillows at least annually to prevent the health risk posed by this build up.
4. Using strongly scented products
When cleaning your bedroom, note that you’ll sleep in it in a couple of hours. As such, avoid using detergents and solutions with strong fragrances. Inhalation of these scents when sleeping will definitely give you a horrible cold. Use mild scents that will disappear after a few hours.
5. Forgetting to ventilate
You dust and scrub your room thoroughly then you forget to ventilate adequately; that means you have done zero work. When dusting, the dust rises in to the air and if not let out properly, it will settle back on to other surfaces. Before you start cleaning, open the windows and let the air and sunshine in. It will add life to the room. The sun and the air will clear the dampness that is usually felt in bedrooms. It will also take out any unsettled dust out of your room.
6. Forgetting the floor
The bedroom floor should be cleaned, regardless of whether you have a carpet, rug or wooden floor. It does not matter whether you walk in to your room on tip toes to avoid touching the floor, it should still be cleaned. Floors should be vacuumed properly whether there is a carpet or wood. Carpets should be washed after a certain period time to remove collected dirt. Make sure you clean under the bed as much as you never step on that part.
7. Using the wrong tools and methods
Bedrooms tend to have a lot of upholstery, fabrics and furniture. For each surface, choose the right tools to use and the best method of cleaning. For example, some people change the bedding first then proceed to dusting. This is wrong. The dust will settle on the clean bedding and harm you. Also, with solutions and detergents, use products that are preferably made specifically for upholstery. This will preserve the good condition of such surfaces.
The bedroom should be given a thorough cleaning just like other rooms. Avoid cleaning mistakes that will harm you and the condition of your bedroom.
