The bathroom is one of the most used rooms in the home and you end up spending about a quarter of your day there. Let us face it, cleaning the bathroom has never been an easy task and most people dread the thought of just cleaning it. What makes it worse is that most people are not keen on bathroom cleaning. They do it for the sake and make many mistakes while at it. To do the job efficiently one should avoid these common blunders. This helps in reducing the work load meant for the next cleaning session.
– Most people forget to switch on their exhaust fans before and after hitting the shower.
It is important to always do so or if you do not own one then you can open your bathroom window. This helps to remove mold and mildew and reduce their chances of growth since they breed in damp places that are full of moisture. Leave the fan on or let the window stay open for about 15-20 minutes. Not only does this help in aeration but it also lets in sunlight and that is the best germ and bacteria killer. You can also use a squeegee to absorb moisture that is lingering on the walls.
– Using the same product for all surfaces and purposes is wrong.
Every area in the bathroom needs a different product. Seek products that are specifically meant for the tubs, tiled areas, sink basin and mirrors. Spray glass cleaners work best on mirrors while disinfecting wipes and tile spray cleaners work well on tiles and general surfaces. Invest in a variety of cleaning agents to avoid leaving smudges.
– You often tend to neglect unseen parts of the toilet assuming they are clean.
Most people only pay attention to the toilet seat and bowl but they totally ignore the base. The exterior of the toilet accumulates germs and dust overtime and it can be very unhygienic. The lid, tank and base of the toilet deserve often cleaning and wiping. The handle is one of the most handled parts of the toilet by multiple hands and that alone is very dangerous. Make a point of disinfecting it too and not just the obvious sections.
– Avoid putting the toilet cleaning brush back in its holder right after cleaning.
It is important to note that it is still wet and germs and bacteria breed most in such conditions. Wet and humid places are their perfect grounds. Let the brush drip and dry after cleaning of the bowl. You can rinse it and let it air outside or set it across the seat. Only put it back when it is completely dry since if you don’t you will only be reapplying the germs you had cleaned the last cleaning session. Always freshen up the bowl brush and its holder by spraying them with antibacterial cleaners or soaking them in the same. Soak for as long as you wish then rinse and let them drip and dry out.
– The liner of the shower curtain is another area that is ever neglected and many people only notice it when it is totally unappealing then they opt to buy another and replace.
This can be avoided by frequent cleaning to avoid build up and formation of cloudy residue. You can run it through a washing machine on a cycle that is delicate with some bleach and hot water. Tumble dry for some few minutes on low. To give your liner a longer shelf life, always close the curtain after showers to keep it straight and aired. It also helps to drip more water and quickly. Liners that are bunched up store water and moisture and they serve as attractions to fungi such as mold and mildew.
– Forgetting the insignificant components of the bathroom like shelves, racks, handles, toothbrush holders and panty hangers is yet another common mistake.
Consider all the points that could have been touched or used in any way and clean or wipe them regularly. Minute accessories can be run through a dishwasher. You can also soak them up with some warm water and disinfectant then clean with a soft brush and let them drip dry. Baby toys also need frequent treatment or replacement if need be.
